Israel has launched its first domestically built quantum computer, a 20-qubit system utilizing superconducting technology. The Israel Innovation Authority, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Hebrew University, and Israeli tech company Yissum collaborated to develop it. This quantum computer supports both defense and civilian applications and establishes a cutting-edge infrastructure for further advancements.

The aerospace company has integrated this breakthrough with its work in robotics, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity to strengthen Israel’s defense capabilities. Hebrew University and industry partners contributed to creating a robust R&D environment, driving innovation in quantum technologies. The Israel Innovation Authority says this is a big step for Israel’s high-tech abilities.

A quantum computer uses the principles of quantum mechanics to process information exponentially faster than classical computers. This means a quantum computer can handle big problem-solving tasks, encryption, drug discovery, and artificial intelligence. Drug discovery, for example, is the process of finding new medicines by looking for chemicals that might help fight a disease. Once scientists find these, they test them to make sure they work and are safe to use.

The U.S., U.K., Germany, Canada, France, China, Japan, and the Netherlands, along with several other countries, have their own quantum computers, with the U.S. leading the pack with over 350 systems. Many countries with a GDP between $500 billion and $1 trillion have invested in homegrown quantum computers. Israel, with a GDP of $509 billion, has now joined this elite group. Despite being the size of New Jersey and having a population of only 9 million—comparable to the city of New York—Israel continues to punch above its weight in global innovation and technology.
