A friendly fire incident in northern Gaza’s Jabaliya resulted in the deaths of five Israeli soldiers and injuries to seven others, three of whom are in serious condition. The soldiers, all members of the Paratroopers Brigade’s 202nd Battalion, were mistakenly shelled by a tank that misidentified them as enemy forces.
The fallen soldiers include 21-year-old Sergeant Betzalel David Shashuah from Tel Aviv, 22-year-old Captain Roy Beit Yaakov, 22, from Eli, 20-year-old Sergeant Daniel Chemu, from Tiberias, 20-year-old Sergeant Ilan Cohen from Karmiel, and 22-year-old Staff Sergeant Gilad Arye Boim from Karnei Shomron.
The young men were killed in a friendly fire incident when two IDF tanks, under heavy rocket-propelled grenade attacks, mistakenly fired on their own forward battalion headquarters in Jabalya, in northern Gaza. All had been fighting in the Battalion 202, Paratroopers Brigade. Shashuah, described by his family as a beloved son and a hero, had only two months left of his service, but insisted on returning to fight with his comrades. He is survived by his parents, Shai and Galit, and his four siblings. He was buried at the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul.
The IDF is investigating the incident, which has contributed to the total of 278 Israeli soldiers killed during the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza. Communication issues and exhaustion among troops have been identified as factors in such accidents. The IDF continues operations in Gaza, with the Commando Brigade recently deployed to Rafah to join the effort against Hamas, despite international pressure to avoid a full-scale offensive.
