The Toronto International Film Festival uninvited the directors of and cancelled the screening of the October 7, 2023 documentary “The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue”, citing copyright concerns and concerns for anti-Israel protests, claiming “filmmakers did not receive permission from Hamas terrorists whose clips are featured in the film.”
The film tells the story of Maj. Gen. (Res.) Noam Tibon, who set out to save his son, prominent journalist Amir Tibon, and Amir’s immediate family as they were attacked by Hamas Terrorists at their home in Kibbutz Nahal Oz. The movie features footage from the terrorists, as they set out through Israel’s devastated Gaza border communities. News of the movies’ disinvitation were published in Deadline, a news site that gives updates on prominent journalists and outlets. Sources close to the film production said the cancellation for using Hamas footage was unjustified.
In an on air interview with Channel 12, line producer Talia Harris Ram called the decision “a bit of a joke.” Noam Tibon himself said “it was absurd and bizarre.” Tibon continued “The Toronto Film Festival has succumbed to pressure and threats, and has chosen to silence and erase October 7. My message to the festival management: The truth cannot be erased. The atrocities committed by Hamas cannot be erased or denied.”
In a statement to Deadline, a festival spokesperson said: “The invitation for the Canadian documentary film The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue was withdrawn by TIFF because general requirements for inclusion in the festival, and conditions that were requested when the film was initially invited, were not met, including legal clearance of all footage.”
“The purpose of the requested conditions was to protect TIFF from legal implications and to allow TIFF to manage and mitigate anticipated and known risks around the screening of a film about highly sensitive subject matter, including potential threat of significant disruption,” they continued.
According to Ynet, the film will be shown in September in a public screening put together by the Jewish community.
Tibon’s story has also been featured on “60 Minutes” and Amir Tibon has written a book about his story.
