In a surprising turn of events, Yahya Sinwar, leader of Hamas in Gaza and mastermind behind the October 7th attacks was killed by IDF forces. This operation was not based on national intelligence but on a random encounter. The identification of Sinwar’s body was confirmed using dental records and DNA.
Among the individuals found alongside Yahya Sinwar was reportedly his bodyguard, who also served as an UNRWA teacher. Items discovered on their bodies included cash, weapons, a lighter, and an identification card indicating the individual’s employment with UNRWA.

This raises further concerns about the involvement of individuals working with UNRWA being closely linked to Hamas leadership. The IDF and the Shin Bet confirmed through dozens of their operations over the last year, and in recent weeks in the area where he was eliminated, restricted Yahya Sinwar’s operational movement as he was pursued by the forces and led to his elimination.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered a potential breakthrough in hostage deals, stating that those who hand over hostages will receive permission to leave Gaza. In his statement, he declared, “Hamas will no longer rule Gaza; this is the beginning of the day after.” Netanyahu also sent a direct message to Hamas terrorists, stating: “Whoever is holding the hostages and lays down his weapon, we will allow him to live. But whoever harms them, blood is on his head.”
The actual elimination of Yahya Sinwar occurred on Wednesday. However, due to concerns about explosives and traps in the area, infantry forces only entered the building this morning to search. It was during this operation that Sinwar’s body was located.
In the weeks leading up to his elimination, intelligence gathered by the Shin Bet and Military Intelligence guided IDF operations targeting suspected areas where senior Hamas leaders were believed to be hiding. During the operation, forces from Brigade 828 (Bislah) identified and killed three terrorists. After further verification, it was confirmed that Sinwar was among them. His elimination is a significant step in Israel’s ongoing efforts to dismantle Hamas’ leadership in Gaza.
An Arab diplomat involved in negotiations stated: “Sinwar’s elimination will not push Hamas to soften its position. They would rather die than surrender. The ball is now in Israel’s court, as they have an opportunity to act on the current deal.”
Sources suggest discussions are underway about possibly offering immunity to remaining senior Hamas officials to facilitate a breakthrough in hostage negotiations.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has reportedly discussed Sinwar’s elimination and its impact on hostage negotiations with the Prime Minister of Qatar.
Defense Minister Gallant spoke at the Gaza border saying: “Sinwar ended his life beaten, hunted, and fleeing, not as a commander, but as someone who only cared for himself. This is a clear message to the families of the fallen and the hostages, but also to the people of Gaza: the end of the man who brought disaster upon you has come. This is the time to release the hostages and surrender.”
