Hamas has delayed Saturday’s planned hostage release until further notice, marking an immediate suspension of the ceasefire-hostage agreement. They are citing Israel’s failure to fulfill obligations regarding civilian return to northern Gaza as their reason. Notably, this announcement came on the heels of the Trump-Netanyahu summit in Washington, D.C., where the top issue of hostage negotiations advanced thoroughly.
Defense Minister Israel Katz has directed the IDF toward its highest alert status since the announcement, and Prime Minister Netanyahu is calling for an emergency security meeting. This all comes just days after three Israeli hostages emerged from Hamas captivity Saturday, February 8th. They looked entirely emaciated, which was a haunting testament to their 16-month ordeal in captivity with no sunlight or food. The men, visibly weak, were paraded in a staged ceremony where they were forced to speak before being handed over to the Red Cross. Before their release, Hamas militants forced the visibly frail men to stand on a stage in Gaza, holding “release certificates” and reciting scripted words of gratitude while under duress. The hostages were being held on each arm by Hamas terrorists. The staged event was widely condemned in Israel. In response, Israel freed nearly 200 Palestinian terrorists who were serving time for heinous crimes, also appearing emaciated, with a few requiring medical attention. One was reported for going through cancer. Reports are surfacing of the horrific conditions that the recently released hostages endured. After 491 days of captivity, Ohad Ben-Ami, Or Levy, and Eli Sharabi are suffering from severe physical and mental deterioration, heart disorders, decreased muscle mass, and prolonged infection. The former captives were also given only a quarter of pita per day to eat, and there were periods when they could only relieve themselves twice a day, and at specific times. Another article quoted that they were chained, gagged, burned, and hung upside down.
Footage captures Ohad Ben-Ami’s reunion with his wife, his daughters Yuli, Natalie, and Ella, his mother Esther, and his brother Kobi.
His daughters tell him: ”Dad, we love you, we missed you so much!” Ohad responds: ”I have so much to catch up on.”
Eliyahu (Eli) Sharabi returns to his mother and siblings emaciated. He survived Hamas captivity for 491 days, and Hamas cruelly made him make a statement that he was excited to be reunited with his wife and two daughters. They were killed on October 7th. He found this information upon his return.
Eli’s wife, Lianne, and their two daughters, Noiya and Yahel, were murdered on October 7 in Be’eri. His brother, Yossi, was kidnapped and did not survive captivity. Israel is trying to bring his body back to be laid to rest in dignity. Eli and Yossi’s mother, Hanna, and their siblings Sharon and Osnat dedicated themselves to the fight for their return, together with their family.
Or Levy’s brother places a ball and drawings from Or’s son, Almog, at the reception point in preparation for the returning hostages.
President Donald Trump expressed frustration with the ongoing ceasefire between Israel and Hamas after seeing images of three released Israeli hostages appearing severely emaciated. Speaking aboard Air Force One, he compared their frail conditions to Holocaust survivors and suggested that U.S. patience with the ceasefire deal might soon run out. The images of Or Levy, Ohad Ben Ami, and Eli Sharabi, who had been held captive for 16 months, sparked widespread condemnation in Israel, with officials calling their treatment a violation of human rights. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office vowed that the shocking scenes “would not go unaddressed,” while Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar criticized the global community for overlooking Hamas’s treatment of hostages.
Freed hostage Romi Gonen will undergo a 10-hour surgery in what her family says they hope will be the “only one.” Earlier this week, Gonen’s mother, Merav, revealed new details about Hamas’ starvation tactics and Romi’s recovery process. She also shared that her daughter’s appetite is finally returning to normal after three weeks of recovery. Gonen was abducted from the Nova Music Festival and held for 477 days.
The IDF announced that, following a situational assessment, leave for combat soldiers and operational units in the Southern Command has been postponed, and the level of readiness has been raised. The army also stated that additional forces are being deployed to the area to support defensive operations. These reinforcements, according to the IDF, will enhance security and improve preparedness for various possible scenarios.
