National Unity chairman Benny Gantz announces he and his party (called Blue and White in Israel) are withdrawing from the Israeli government. This comes as he accuses Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of hindering Israel’s chances of achieving a decisive victory over Hamas. Gantz criticized Netanyahu for political maneuvering and hesitation in making crucial decisions, claiming it was necessary for the good of the state to leave the coalition. Gantz had called for an agreed-upon vision for the future of the war by June 8th and left when that unified vision was not realized.
Despite Netanyahu’s plea for unity amid the ongoing war, and asking Gantz to stay, the Statesman along with fellow National Unity ministers, resigned, citing the introduction of ‘political considerations’ into war cabinet discussions. Gantz is pushing for new national elections to form a government capable of addressing Israel’s challenges effectively and backed the US-proposed plan for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
The exit of National Unity from the coalition does not topple the government, which still holds a majority in the Knesset.
Tensions between the parties has been growing since Gantz joined the emergency government. Gantz’s decision was met with both support and criticism, highlighting the deep political divisions within Israel. His call for new elections and his commitment to supporting efforts to secure the release of hostages underscore his focus on addressing the broader strategic issues facing the country.
