IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi notified Defense Minister Yisrael Katz and Prime Minister Netanyahu of his plans to resign, citing responsibility for the deadly October 7, 2023 assault on Israel. He is resigning 10 months earlier than the standard three-year term, after two years and two months in office. While taking accountability for his failures, he also noted his and the IDF’s successes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, against the former Assad regime in Syria, against Iran, and in forcing Hamas into a hostage exchange deal. His plan for the next six weeks is to make sure to issue the IDF’s report on the October 7 failures as well as managing the current ceasefire and potential transitions for a permanent ceasefire.
Defense Minister Israel Katz has named three candidates to succeed Halevi. That includes Maj. Gen. Amir Baram, Maj. Gen. Eyal Zamir, and Maj. Gen. Tamir Yadai. Katz will expedite the selection process to address the pressing security challenges facing Israel, with interviews for the candidates beginning next week. Eyal Zamir, the Defense Ministry’s director general, is viewed as the frontrunner, having previously served in top roles such as Deputy Chief of Staff and Commander of the Southern Command. The decision will follow a formal vetting process and cabinet vote.
