Sunday night into Monday is Israel’s Yom HaZikaron, which is Remembrance Day. This is a major moment for the country during the aftermath of October 7th and the ongoing war that has taken some 34,000 Gazan lives, with about half being identified as terrorists by Israel.
760 soldiers died while serving in the military, with 61 disabled veterans succumbing to injuries they got during their service. The majority of deaths occurred during the ongoing war, with 711 soldiers and security force members killed since October 7th. 598 were IDF soldiers.
This toll is the highest since the 1973 Yom Kippur War 51 years ago.The Defense Ministry expressed the challenge of accommodating a high volume of burials amidst ongoing hostilities and increased security measures for Remembrance Day ceremonies.
Immediately After Remembrance Day, every year, Israel joyfully celebrates Independence Day. And it happens as soon as the holiday sets with the sun. It is quite symbolic.
25,034 people have died while defending Israel (even before Israel was independent) since 1860. This is the year from which the Jewish community living in the territory began counting its fallen soldiers. Many women were also a part of this fight.
